How do VCs access intelligence to make a decision about an investment?

Do they read pertinent journals? Talk to consultants? Talk to experts in the field? All or none of these?

Or is it something else entirely?

Please give as much detail as possible

Thanks

A VC will wet his index finger and stick it in the air to see which way the wind is blowing.  Naw, seriously, VCs tend to invest in sectors where they have some understanding and experience.  They will probably read trade magazines, attend conferences, and do copious amounts of research.

And when all else fails...they tend to copy the investment styles of other VC firms.  If a few firms start investing in one type of business, you can bet that other firms will play "follow the leader" and make the same types of investments.
